Biography

As a  retired CPA, I now pursue my passion for digital photography.

Among my accomplishments is a Grand Prize in the Travel Photography category  and a Grand Prize in the Computer Enhanced Photography category in the annual Gurwin Photo Contest.  A total  19 of my images in the permanent collection on display at Gurwin.

In 2008, I was the  featured photographer at the “Art-Trium” in Huntington in a show titled “Awakenings”.  This show was run by the Huntington Arts Council.  In addition over the years, I have been featured in many juried Members Shows at the Huntington Arts Council.

In August, 2008, I was the subject of a  cover story in the Times Beacon, Arts and Lifestyles section, titled  “Take a Virtual Vacation with Local Photographer Herb Knopp”.  Again in  March of 2009, The Times Beacon published a feature article entitled “Herb Knopp Brings a Russian Odessey to Long Island”.

I was also featured in a full two page color article in The Village Connection, titled “From Russia With Love“,  featuring images taken on a trip to Russia and the Ukraine in February 2009 and another full  two page article entitled “Fascination With Exotic Places and Faces” in July 2011.  The May 2012 edition of  The Village Connection featured an article on my trip to Kenya and Tanzania in 2011, entitled  “A Safari to Adventure”.   These articles can be seen on this website under About Herb Knopp/Articles.

The 2009 and 2010 calendars, titled  “There is No Place Like Northport”,  featured several of my images.

One of my images, “The Pottery Seller,  was chosen as part of the Long Island Center of Photography exhibit  in September 2011 at the African American Museum in Hempstead NY.

In 2012, my image, “Three Wise Men”, won an  Honorable Mention in  the world-wide competition run by the Photographic Society of America.

Also in 2012, my image, “The Endless Hall”,  was Best in Show-Runner up in the Gurwin Photo contest.  Another  image,  “The Reader”, won first prize in Master color prints in the Leonard Victor competition run by the Photographic Federation of Long Island.  Finally, my image “Boy on the Beach” was selected to be part of an exhibit by the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society.

In 2014, my image “Meditation” was awarded the Fabian Adler Memorial Award by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport.

In 2014, 2015 and 2016, I was a member of the All Stars of the Photographic Society of Long Island.

I had a one man exhibit, “People Around the World”, for the month of September 2014 at the Northport-East Northport Public Library, featuring 40 images from around the world.

That same exhibit was on display at the Suffolk Jewish Community Center in Commack NY during June and July of 2015

In 2017, I was awarded a 27 (perfect Score) from Photographic Society of Long Island for my image “Camargue Stallion”

In January 2020,  I had a second one man exhibit, “People Around the World”,  at the Northport-East Northport Public Library, featuring 40 images from around the world.

In 2020, I was awarded the Grand Prize, People, in the Gurwin Photo Contest  “Torah Scribe”

My wife, Marsha, and I show various travel DVD’s at local assisted living facilities and libraries at different times during the year.

I am a Master photographer and executive board member of the Huntington Camera Club (www.hccny.org).
